SFUGGENTE

LA CAMBRE
2020 - BRUSSELS

"SFUGGENTE" is a collection of works and prints inspired by a Damassé textile made in Italy and found in the archives of the Musée du Cinquantenaire.

A damassé is a rich and elaborate fabric known for its intricate woven patterns, often featuring floral and geometric motifs.

The term "SFUGGENTE," meaning "elusive" in Italian, likely reflects the presence of four animals, including felines, within the Damassé textile. To delve deeper into the symbolism and aesthetics of these creatures, Suzanne Corcessin drew inspiration from Sylvain Tesson's book La panthère des neiges and the evocative photographs by Vincent Munier, Tesson's collaborator on the project. The intentional link is found in the meticulous attention to detail and the majesty of the animals depicted in the collection's works.

The elusive presence of these creatures, their movements in the mountains, and their patterns blending with their environment mirror how the yarns of the Damassé play with light and movement to reveal intricate designs.

These pieces explore the interplay between tradition and modernity, bridging the historical significance of the textile with new artistic expressions. By drawing from the archives of the Musée du Cinquantenaire, the collection not only pays homage to the craftsmanship of the past but also brings its timeless elegance into a present-day context.

The collection includes various forms of art, such as prints, textiles, and paintings, all echoing the intricate designs and rich textures of the original Damassé fabric. Each piece in "SFUGGENTE" serves as a testament to the enduring allure of historical textiles and their potential to inspire new creative endeavors.
